The process of ‘instant composition’ is both conscious and unconscious. One must know that no one becomes an improviser overnight. Apart from the fact that we still need a bit of talent for that, improvisation is the result of all that we could play so far. An improviser does not let his fingers run at random but unconsciously retains a sense of structure resulting from all the work previously provided. Eventually the sound is not only produced by the hands, but by the whole body, the breath and the head.
